Danny made a snarling noise.

“I’m going to rip you in half, Vlad” he hissed.

Vlad looked unnerved, holding his hands out to try and calm Danny down. “Daniel, I didn’t mean for it-“

“Spare me the lies” Danny growled, starting to advance quickly.

“Daniel, Samantha was- argh!” he shrieked as one of the Gauntlets spikes grazed his face dangerously close to his left eye.

“Don’t you dare speak her name!” Danny yelled, sharply driving the Gauntlets into the older man’s chest and violently pulling his arms apart, as well as ghost away from human.

Vlad hit the ground, gasping for breath and slightly stunned, while his ghost half collapsed from pain and shock a few metres away.

Danny remained standing, arms dropping back down to his sides, vacantly staring and chest heaving from emotion. A distant roar split through the dull buzz of the battle. Pariah Dark, Danny thought distantly, mind not really processing anything.

Screams began ringing out from the human fighters as Pariah reached the edge of the battlefield. Vlad reacted sluggishly, dragging himself away from the noise but his ghost half remained where he was.

Danny glanced over to where Pariah was, a fresh wave of despair washing over him. He couldn’t beat the Ghost King; yes, he’d gotten stronger since his death, but to beat Pariah he’d need to at least double his strength-

Vlad’s ghost half is still stronger than me whispered a voice in his head. Danny slowly turned his eyes towards the ghost, who was trying to crawl away despite the pain.

Danny began to walk towards the ghost, too blinded by emotion to listen to a faint warning feeling in his mind. If I overshadow Vlad’s ghost half, I’ll be able to beat Pariah.

His currently one-track mind made up, he dove forwards to overshadow the ghost, only realising too late what the warning feeling was.

The feeling of flames coursing through non-existent veins allowed only a startled shriek of horror to pass through Danny’s lips before his mind shut down from the pain surging through his ghostly body.

After what seemed like an eternity, the pain gradually ebbed away leaving him sprawled out on the ground.

He felt … powerful, so very powerful … He got up and turned to look at the still-raging battlefield, the sound no longer a dull buzz but a cacophony of shouts and blasts. He looked at his hands. With this power, he could end the war once and for all.

His face split into a murderous grin as he began towards the battleground, revealing razor sharp fangs and making red eyes gleam with insanity.

You can’t have a war if there’s no-one to fight it.

With that sentence twisting around his mind, he let a thick green miasma curl around his palm.

He stopped at the edge of the cliff, took in the sights and sounds, and smiled coldly.

He raised his hand and fired.
Background
A violent war broke out after Pariah Dark was released from the Sarcophagus, as he intended to finish what he started; to completely rule both human and ghost worlds.

The war is Ghosts (Pariah Dark) vs. Humans (International Military Officials).
Vlad took the side of the Ghosts because they have the advantage over the humans; no need to eat/drink/as much sleep as humans, their abilities (Invisibility, etc) and the fact that most humans are still stuck in their ‘ghosts don’t exist’ state of mind and won’t join in until it’s too late for them.

While a large battle rages, Vlad and Danny have their own fight. Sam later comes along to help with the Ghost Gauntlets, as Vlad is still stronger than Danny (it took a great amount of effort and power to come back, due to him not being full-out obsessed then). An ectoblast meant for a duplicate hit her instead and she instantly dies. Vlad does regret this, and it was purely an accident but …
…it tips Danny over the edge, and he decides that he’s not going to leave Vlad in one piece.

---Notes---
- Plot Bunny struck when listening to ‘Last Breath’ by Evanescence, hence the title.

- This extract is about 7/8 months old at least, but could be older. I can tell this because I'd write this scene in a different way now.

- Was originally going to be part of a oneshot, but I abandoned it - the idea was too complex for a single chapter, I thought. I have also toyed with the idea of writing full story (and have made a rough draft of a plotline) but I doubt that it will ever progress past a few scattered scenes.

---Character Notes---
- Set when Danny would have been about 18-19 years old. (So 4-5 Years in the future)

- Danny was killed early on in the war, as Pariah thought him a threat, but his desire to protect those he cared about and almost all of his power allowed him to come back as Danny Phantom three months after his death.

- Jazz and Maddie died in an ambush attack a few months after Danny returned. Jack died a year and a bit later while trying to hunt down the ghost responsible (Prince Aragon). Tucker was killed while trying to escape a crumbling building a couple of months before the story. Danny hasn’t had time to grieve properly, so the emotional pressures are huge.

- As he is the only half-ghost on the human’s side of the war, there is a lot of physical and mental pressure on him to help the humans survive – this is made worse by the deaths of those nearly all those closest to him. Sam was the only reason he didn’t have a breakdown, and because she’s the only person he’s got left (Valerie being cold and distant to him and Danielle being destroyed) he gets obsessively protective, hence why he's so angry when Sam dies (he feels as though he's let her down and his upset with himself for doing so).
